There is no denying that we live in a connected world - and cruise ships are no exception. What used to be an opportunity to get away from everything and just sit back and relax, has changed into yet another place where you can keep up with the latest in your Facebook account or Twitter page.

This past weekend, I took a 3 day trip on the Carnival Dream, and spent a little time going over its various technologies designed to keep you connected with the mainland.
Continue reading Cruise ship technology - staying in touch with the mainland

Cruise ship technology - staying in touch with the mainland originally appeared on Gadling on Fri, 20 Nov 2009 13:30:00 EST.
The application delivers reports from the US, Canada, Europe, Argentina, Australia, Chile and New Zealand. In total, over 200 resorts are available, and users can pick their 12 favorite to be added to the cool rotating menu.

Resort information is very impressive - you'll get the latest snowfall, current snow depth, temperatures, conditions, the status of lifts and trails, and even the latest Tweets made by the resort.

In addition to this, you can also access maps, a five day forecast, webcams and contact information.

Of course, since REI commissioned the app, you can also find your nearest REI store, follow REI Tweets and go shopping for new gear, right inside the app.

The best part is the price - free. You'll find the application in the app store by searching REI or by clicking this link (iTunes URL)

In this review I'm going to introduce you to one of the newest netbook computers from HP. The Mini 5101 is a very compact machine designed with the business traveler in mind. When building a computer for business use, HP obviously put a lot of time into making the machine able to stand up to the rough environment.

Because of this, the entire machine is built around a magnesium frame, it also features an aluminum screen lid, near full size keyboard, hard drive drop protection, a special keyboard coating and an easy to upgrade memory bay.
Continue reading Gadling gear review - HP Mini 5101 netbook

Gadling gear review - HP Mini 5101 netbook originally appeared on Gadling on Thu, 19 Nov 2009 10:00:00 EST. Normally, I'll travel with a couple of books, and I'll leave copies of the same books at home - at bedtime, I simply use a speakerphone and we'll both read along in the same book.

A new online service called "A Story Before Bed" takes that principle, and moves it online. You start by purchasing a book, then you use a webcam and microphone to record yourself reading.

When it comes time for your child to be read to, he or she sits behind the computer, and watches mommy or daddy read to them.

Books cost $6.99, and the current selection offers almost 60 different titles. It is hard to argue with anything that helps keep you in touch with your kids, especially if it is something as important as your nighttime reading routine.

The only downsides are the price, and that you'll need to sit your kid(s) down in front of the PC for them to read the book. You can of course bring a laptop into their bedroom if you have one. As I mentioned, the price is a little steep - kids books from the local book store are usually about $3.99. Of course, one major advantage of this service is that you don't actually have to be available for bed time, something that is quite handy if you are dealing with a time difference.

About a month ago I wrote about a new mobile entertainment device called FLO TV. The technology behind FLO has been around for some time, and has been available to AT&T and Verizon Wireless subscribers. Starting today, you can also get your entertainment fix on the portable FLO TV personal television.

With mobile TV like this, you'll be able to finally watch something decent when you are stuck at the airport, or use it to keep your kids entertained during those long road trips.

The 3.5" screen delivers programming from over 15 channels, and the TV itself costs $249, which includes a 6 month subscription.

We'll try and bring you a full review of this mobile entertainment device as soon as we can get our hands on a unit! If you don't want to wait on a review, you can order FLO TV today from Amazon, or pick one up on store at your local Best Buy.

TripDeck is an itinerary management application with real-time flight status notifications. The program can integrate with your TripIt itineraries, and warns of delays, gate changes and other alerts.

I've been using FlightTrack Pro for some time now, and it has become an invaluable tool when I'm on the road. In many cases. FlightTrack Pro has been able to warn me of changes, even before the airline notified their own gate staff.

TripDeck takes the best of FlightTrack, and focuses on alerts and other status updates as well as a really easy to use interface.

The program allows you to manually import your trip, or link to your TripIt account. Once a trip is in TripDeck, it is organized into "trip cards" for each part of your trip (flight, car rental, hotel). With a simple finger swipe, you can browse through each segment. But what if you are not equipped with the latest and greatest smartphone, or you just want to catch up on your favorite team when running through the airport on your way to your next flight?

Lexy is a new service that aims to deliver just that - instead of sending you online, Lexy provides news the old fashioned way - spoken.

To get Lexy, you simply dial 877-FYI LEXY and follow the voice prompts. Once you find your way around, you can customize the service by creating your own "LexyList" containing your favorite channels.

I took the service for a spin, and was amazed at the variety of content. Channels come from over 100 different providers, including popular choices like the Onion, CNN, NPR and CNet.

Think of Lexy as Podcasts on your phone, without the need for a data connection or pricey phone. Best of all, Lexy is free.

Get sports, news, entertainment and more on your phone with Lexy originally appeared on Gadling on Tue, 10 Nov 2009 15:30:00 EST. Verizon Wireless became the third US operator to hop on board the Android bandwagon, and did so with not one, but two different Android devices.

The Motorola Droid and the HTC Droid Eris are bother very impressive phones. Of course, a good smartphone becomes a great smartphone when developers create high quality applications for the platform.

One of those apps to be released this week is the Slacker Personal Radio player. It appeared in the Android market on Thursday, and is free of charge.

Using the app is free as well - though if you want to remove ads and add the ability to skip more than 6 tracks an hour, you'll want to consider upgrading to Slacker Radio Plus (starting at just $3.99/month).

The app mimics the Slacker browser interface nicely, and you get the same favorite/block controls that give you full control over your music preferences.

I found the time to load tracks a bit on the long side, even when on 3G, and unlike on the Blackberry Slacker version, no tracks are cached to the memory card, so you will always need to be in range of WiFi or a cell signal to use Slacker. And, unlike on the iPhone, Slacker runs nicely in the background, and even shows your current track in the Android dropdown notification bar.

We are 7 weeks away from the time of year where we all commit to losing all those excess pounds. And like most new years resolutions, by the second week of January, most of us will be back to just dealing with the flab.

Frequent travelers have it even harder - when large chunks of your week are spent at bad hotels or the airport food court, it is pretty tough to stay healthy. Sure, people with a decent amount of discipline will always manage to find a salad at the airport, but more often than not, a healthy meal on the road will be the airline snack box or another night at the hotel restaurant.
Continue reading Gadling gear review - Bodybugg personal calorie management system

Gadling gear review - Bodybugg personal calorie management system originally appeared on Gadling on Thu, 05 Nov 2009 10:30:00 EST. So, when I received a SCOTTEVEST/SeV jacket to try, my hope was that it would be the ultimate, wearable, third carry-on of which I've been dreaming.

The "technology-enabled clothing" from scottevest.com has a lot of secret pockets, from attractive casual men's shirts with 3 hidden compartments to superjackets like the Scott Jordan Signature System combo (which our own Scott reviewed last September here), which features a fleece and jacket with a total of 52 pockets, many of them specific to particular items like water bottles or pens, and a patented "Personal Area Network for earbud wire management." The jackets also have a "Weight Management System" which helps distribute the weight of all your worldly belongings evenly on your shoulders.

You probably have the same question I did: "How much can it really carry?" Not only could this jacket potentially save you money at the bag check, but it could also mean no more carrying a bag (or dreaded fanny pack) while sight-seeing, or even replace a backpack on a hike.

I decided to test out the 18-pocket, $120 SCOTTEVEST Women's Essential Travel Jacket by attempting to load everything from my gigantic handbag into it (thus freeing up my hands for a whole other "small personal item"). Check out my findings in the gallery below.
In some cases, the unit may even expand into Mexico, and premium systems will have Europe pre-loaded.

If you are heading abroad, but your GPS unit does not come with maps of your destination, all is not lost, and in some cases you'll actually be able to load new maps.

Here are five tips on how to travel with your GPS, and how to take it abroad.
Continue reading Taking your GPS abroad - what you need to know

Taking your GPS abroad - what you need to know originally appeared on Gadling on Mon, 02 Nov 2009 16:00:00 EST. It'll get you where you need to be, on time, and (usually) with the best route. There are however some basic precautions you need to take in order to stay safe. Some of these tips are very logical, but as I drive around, I still see people neglect to follow even the most basic safety tips.

I have compiled 6 basic tips that will help keep you and your passengers safer as you drive around with your GPS unit.
Continue reading GPS safety - how to be safe and stay safe

GPS safety - how to be safe and stay safe originally appeared on Gadling on Mon, 02 Nov 2009 14:00:00 EST.
In some cases, this could be as simple as a misspelled address, but in others, it means your GPS unit needs a new map database.

When you buy your unit, the maps are often at least a year old, but some units that have been on store shelves for a couple of years could try navigating you based on three or four year old maps.

In that period, new streets have been added, and map errors have been corrected. Thankfully, on most brand name GPS units, getting a new map is fairly easy, and quite affordable. The best place to start is your favorite electronics retailer or on the site of the GPS unit manufacturer.

For most units, the investment is quite modest - about $50 will get you the latest version (or one no more than 6 months old). Installing the map update varies from vendor to vendor. On Magellan GPS units, you order a physical SD card for the unit, on other brands you'll usually need to download a large file and copy that from your PC to the device.

If you purchased your GPS unit within the last 30 days, contact the manufacturer to see whether you are eligible for a free map update, especially in those cases where your brand new GPS device comes with not so brand new maps.
Find the right destination with a GPS map update originally appeared on Gadling on Mon, 02 Nov 2009 10:00:00 EST. They slipped on easily and felt, quite simply, cozy. When I stepped out of my apartment, I delighted in thinking I was wearing slippers, despite visible evidence to the contrary.

The design straddles outdoor and office - you can get away with either. With a pair of cargo shorts or the khaki uniform of a cubicle dweller, the Terrasoles Logans won't look out of place. Yet, the flexibility of style does not compare to the comfort these shoes provide. Among the softest and lightest shoes I've slipped on my feet (aside from flip-flops or running shoes), they were an absolute joy to wear.

The Logans basically wrap right around your feet, snugly supporting your dogs while you put them through their proverbial (and literal) paces. The softness is what struck me, even more than with the Tukermans, but for this reason, I do have some concerns about their endurance. I've pushed the Logans a bit, and they have held up well. For normal use, they'll probably have a fairly long life, but consistent urban use will be tough on these shoes. I've already noticed some rapid wear on the outer soles.

For streets, sand and trails, the Terrasoles Logans are a good choice - a pair of shoes you can wear anyplace. I've been happy every time I've put them on.

Travel footwear review: Terrasoles Logans originally appeared on Gadling on Fri, 30 Oct 2009 15:00:00 EST. For just $7.95/month, customers with a Blackberry Curve 8320, Curve 8900 or Bold can access any of the 100,000+ Boingo Wi-Fi hotspots around the world.

This means you will no longer have to deal with pricey roaming charges or other nasty surprises when you get back home.

To make the connection process easier, Boingo has created a Blackberry connection and authentication application. This program tells you when you are in range of a Boingo hotspot, and it takes care of the entire login procedure.

You can even sign up for the service through the software, or if you prefer, you can enroll on your own PC. The $7.95 plan is only for mobile devices, but this also means anyone with an iPhone, Android powered phone or any other Wi-Fi enabled mobile device can sign up. If you'd prefer to connect using your laptop or netbook, you'll pay $9.95/month for a US plan, or $59 for a global plan. With hotels regularly charging up to $20/day for Internet access, this can easily be a money saving product.
Boingo introduces Blackberry connection app and $7.95 global Wi-Fi plan originally appeared on Gadling on Wed, 28 Oct 2009 15:30:00 EST. In anticipation of the plethora of outdoor activities that rural Australia offers, I decided to get a fresh pair of hiking shoes to keep me safe and comfortable during long days of Outback exploration. So, for my first trip to the bush, I packed a pair of Teva's Riva eVent.

When it comes to hiking boots, I want three things: comfort, durability and water resistance. How did the Riva eVent stack up against the harsh landscape of the Outback?
There is one thing the current generation of laptop computers has in common with fast food coffee - they are both extremely hot. Especially in computers with an advanced processor, the heat coming from the exhaust fan can reach well above 140F, and while that may not be enough to give you burns, it really does become uncomfortable about about an hour.

There are a lot of different cooling products on the market. Some are as simple as providing a gap between your lap and your computer, while others use powered fans to draw the heat away. Cooling fans have one major disadvantage - they draw their power from your laptop battery, so while they may help cool things down a little, they'll also take away valuable battery run time from you.
Continue reading Gadling gear review - ThermaPAK HeatShift notebook cooling pad

Gadling gear review - ThermaPAK HeatShift notebook cooling pad originally appeared on Gadling on Tue, 20 Oct 2009 11:30:00 EST.
Part of travel is making fantastic photos, and part of fantastic photos is being able to show them to the world. To celebrate our birthday, we'll be giving away five IPEVO Kaleido R7 WiFi enabled photo frames.

These are no ordinary photo frames - its 7" hi-res display can display online content from a variety of sources. It also has 512MB of internal memory and a memory card slot for old fashioned photo sharing.

The Kaleido R7 supports live galleries with online images from Flickr, Picasa, RSS (text and images), Google image search and even Facebook. It'll automatically sync with images from your computer (Windows and Mac).

The 7" screen rotates 90 degrees, and the included remote control and touch sensitive buttons allow you to control what you watch. The IPEVO Kaleido K7 costs $149.99, but you can enter our contest to win one of five of these fantastic frames!

Entering is simple, and you have three different ways:

Leave a comment below, telling us where you took your favorite photo (if you have a link to it, even better!).

Follow us on Twitter and retweet this message.

Join our Flickr photo pool. Anyone who is in our pool when the contest ends will be eligible to win.

You can enter in all three ways, but only once in each. This will give you three chances at winning one of these fantastic frames!
Continue reading Happy birthday Gadling! Given the attention this has been getting, I decided to get my hands on one to see what all the buzz is about.

Powermat is one of the first commercially available wireless charging systems on the market. Universal wireless charging has been promised for years, but Powermat is the first to actually deliver on that promise.

The Powermat product consists of a wireless charging mat, and an assortment of charging adapters, each specifically designed for wirelessly charging your device.

The charging mat is available in two versions - a home/office version, and a portable one. Obviously most readers here will be most interested in the portable one, so that is what my focus will be on.
Continue reading Gadling gear review - Powermat portable wireless charger

Gadling gear review - Powermat portable wireless charger originally appeared on Gadling on Mon, 19 Oct 2009 08:30:00 EST.
